Fun-Filled Wedding Exits

In the 500+ weddings photographed by Ovation Images, we have seen many fun and dramatic wedding exits that really added delight to the day for our brides and their guests.  Since what people remember tends to be the last event of the day, a unique and playful exit at the end of your day will be talked about and shared online by many of your guests. Here are some ideas from recent Ovation Images Brides…

Cake sprinkles! Let your guests “top off” your day and send you to your limo in a rain of tasty cake sprinkles! As you can see, everyone gets into this!

…or how about confetti launchers for every guest? Oh my!

And The Confetti Flies! by OvationImages.com

Here’s a NEW idea for a nighttime exit….LED-lit confetti helicopters! Your guests shoot them in the air high above you and you exit in a blaze of falling stars! (find them cheap here: LED Helicopters at Stacksocial).

Sparklers are somewhat more traditional in the way of a fun night time wedding exit. You have to buy real wedding sparklers for this to work well (wedding sparklers burn for about 2 minutes).  Then someone has to organize your guests outside either making a tunnel for you to duck under as you leave or waving beautiful designs in the air all around you during a last romantic spin.

Finally, if you don’t want to lead everyone outside, consider having your DJ get everyone on the dance floor at the end for one big, fun group picture while everyone sings along to your favorite party anthem. This is always fun and always produces some great pictures for the last page of your wedding album!

Cheap Wedding Photography Is Expensive. Do you know why high-quality professional wedding photography costs more? Because it’s worth it! Thousands of couples who got married before you decided they were willing to pay more to ensure better results. And it turns out, they were right!

Why is that true? It’s true because you end up looking at your wedding pictures hundreds if not thousands of times–for many years afterward! Anything you don’t like or that you think may be missing will grind on your mind until you don’t want to look at your wedding pictures again.

Bottom line? Wedding photography is not like chair covers–or even catering! If you decide that don’t like the chair covers–no problem, because you never have to look at them again. If you don’t like the food that your caterer serves at your wedding, well you never have to taste it again. But those wedding pictures stay with you day after day, year after year–forever!

Many professional wedding planners will tell you that wedding photography is not actually a wedding “expense”. They regard it a a lifetime investment, and they often suggest you budget for your photography like an investment that you expect to pay off for years to come.

Sure you have a budget. But don’t use it like a club to scare away all the higher-quality, most-experienced wedding photographers. Be gentle and flexible when you meet with them and you will most likely be met with the same in return.

Good photographers love their clients and their work. In fact, that love is what makes their photography good! When you are choosing a photographer, focus on finding the love–and be prepared to adjust your budget. Wouldn’t you rather spend more than you had planned now to avoid that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach later EVERY TIME that you look through your wedding pictures? “Later” is too late to change it–and too late to figure out that you under-budgeted your wedding photography.

“Cake, dear?” by OvationImages.com

Final Word: Invest Your Time Too! — Schedule Your Day Wisely. Your wedding photography will be better the more time you allocate to it. Likewise, it will be worse the less time you allocate to it. If you are not seeing each other before your ceremony, then you need at least 2 hours in between your ceremony and reception. No ifs, ands or “but our guests are waiting!” If they love you, they will be glad to wait–they know that this time is the only time you have to create pictures that you will share with your children’s children!  It starts to sound pretty worthwhile when you put it like that, huh? After you have made the money decision, be certain you have also allowed more than adequate time for your photography.

Smart Romantic Wedding Planning

A good wedding planner is not free. But she saves you SO much that a good planner is worth her weight in gold. And we’re not just talking about money!

You're Engaged!

Once you’re engaged, we recommend that you talk with local wedding planners and get a sense about whether a planner would work for you. Wedding planners are the absolute experts. And like any expert, you must pay for their expertise. They will assemble the right package of services for your wedding, select the best vendors for those services, secure discounts for you on many services and make sure that your wedding day will be memorable for all the right reasons.

Best of all, a professional wedding planner can save your romance!  Face it—pricing chair covers and deciding the exact make-up of the 120 dozen cookies that you need are not the most intimate parts of your wedding! In fact, when you add up all these “little” tasks, with their associated quotes, confirmations, payments, delivery schedules and checking to see that what you paid for is what you got, the romance of the day can easily get buried in detail–and all those details come with constant daily reminders of the cost of a wedding. Don’t let planning overload make romance into the last word you think of on your wedding day. OTOH, if you have the time, are a detail person and love this kind of thing, then go for it—you probably wouldn’t want a planner involved. Otherwise, consider your wedding planning options—meet with a few planners and look closely to see if a professional wedding planner would be a good fit for your wedding.

Seeing each other before our wedding ceremony?

Seeing each other before your wedding is such a personal decision! Tradition says no (so does Mom!!). But having a “First Look” where you see each other before your walk down the aisle has one huge advantage–it is romantic and intimate. This is as opposed to a walk down the aisle which is very public and gives you not one second of private “together” time to get into each other and connect. Your walk down the aisle is “live and on stage!” Your First Look is intimate and romantic. You pick.

One more thought….your First Look may be the only private time you have with your lover all day! Without a First Look, most wedding days have no time for intimate moments between just the two of you. There is just too much else going on during a very hectic and crowded day. A lot of couples consider those private moments together to be a big highlight of their wedding day.

Here are some Ovation Images pictures from Brittany and Andrew’s First Look in front of Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh…

The Five Rules For Buying Wedding Photography (Part 1)
by Don Merz, Ovation Images (Pittsburgh’s Most-Trusted Wedding Photographer Since 2001)

(Part 1 of 2: We didn’t make these rules. After photographing 500+ weddings, we just know what they are…)
Ovation Images Rule 1. Know What You Like. An hour of web surfing will uncover many different styles of photography. Do you like fashion? Well, fashion photography is posed photography. So you need a photographer who is good at posing. You like story-telling pictures? Candid story telling is the core of most wedding photography–so make sure you like the way your photographer shoots candids. The way to be sure is to ask to see a complete wedding–not just the highlights. If you like formal-looking, timeless portraits, then hire a photographer who runs a real brick-and-mortar portrait studio. Studio photographers are the best at achieving the classic, timeless look. Don’t meet with any photographers until you have surfed enough to know what you like.
groomsmen getting ready for the ceremony, gray tuxedo, gray and purple wedding by OvationImages.com

“I think we’re ready….” by OvationImages.com

Ovation Images Rule 2. Know Who You Like. This is where being a bridesmaid and/or attending lots of your friends’ weddings and your cousins’ weddings will pay off. (Hopefully you were paying attention!)….and you had at least a few chances to see their photographers in action. Which ones behaved in ways that you liked? What did they do that the bride and groom enjoyed? Did you notice the photographer a lot during the day? Was that a good thing or a bad thing? Did they cause any delay during the day? What did they wear? Did you notice their professional approach? Or lack thereof? Make some notes, and when you meet with photographers ask them what their personal style is on the wedding day. Ask them what they do when people stand in the aisle in front of them taking pictures on their phones. Ask them if your friends and family are allowed to take pictures. Don’t be shy–make sure you understand how they will behave. It’s important because you will be spending all day with your photographers!

Dana and Sam had such a gorgeous ceremony at the landmark Sacred Heart Church in Shadyside, one of Pittsburgh’s best known neighborhoods.   There were more than a few tears of joy to be seen as Dana walked down the aisle.  After a quick stop at Mellon Institute for some photography at the famous pillars, it was on to Sheraton Station Square for a reception that rolled elegance and “wild party!” into one fantastic evening.  Dana & Sam thank you so much for sharing your special day with us.  You have truly wonderful family and friends.  Thank you for making us feel so welcome and for being so much fun!!  Best wishes to you both, always!
