You’re Engaged! Now What? Part 2 of 30: The B-Word.

Once you get engaged, the B-word is likely to become a familiar part of your wedding planning process. B is for BUDGET.

You're Engaged!

After you have considered your date carefully (read Part 1 here: http://ovationimages.com/2012/02/08/youre-engaged-now-what-part-1-of-30-its-all-about-the-date/), your next thought might be “I don’t want to spend more than $X”. If you want it all and can afford it all—awesome! Go for it! Otherwise, WAIT! Set your wedding day priorities first. Reception venue selection will be covered in the next four parts of this series—that’s a biggie. After  your reception venue, rank your other purchases like photography, DJ or Band, Videographer, food, cake, liquor, photo booth, ice sculptures, and…..your dress (why the dress is last on OUR list is explained in Part 10!).  Re-rank your list until you have it in the priority order that fits your vision of your wedding day. Then comes the hard part—keeping your priorities straight as the amount left in the budget dwindles!

At one of our weddings last year, the bride’s family was from the old country and the groom’s family were just Pittsburgh folks. The bride wanted an exciting and fun reception for both families. So one of her top priorities was TWO bands—one to play classic old country ethnic songs in the best tradition, and another to rock the house. Her other priorities?  To her the dress was not as important as her families, and she got a relatively inexpensive gown from David’s.  She looked gorgeous.  THAT is the bride knowing her priorities and sticking to them. And her wedding day? To die for! That is what prioritization can do for you. You can see our video of how her wedding turned out here: http://ovationimages.com/2011/05/16/engagement-and-wedding-at-fox-chapel-golf-club/.

You’re Engaged! Now What? Part 1 of 30: It’s all about The Date!

Pittsburgh Engagement Photographer

Probably one of the first things you will think about when you get engaged is when? When will we get married? Stop right now and take a breath!  The date you select drives every other decision you will make and choice you will have about your wedding—so choose wisely! The availability of your church and reception venue are the most obvious date issues. But what about the B word—Budget?  The date you choose will make a big difference to the final cost of your wedding.

Every wedding vendor we know has different rates for the same service depending on the date. Non-Saturday weddings cost less. Winter weddings cost less. This can be a huge factor for one big part of your wedding cost—your reception venue. Ask them about these discounts. Then explore the calendar carefully for opportunities. For example, in some years, at some venues, Memorial Day weekend is still considered “winter” and you may find exceptional deals available to you on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Yes, look to your heart to set your date! But don’t forget the B-word!

The holiday season is the biggest time for engagements, so if your man “pops the question” this winter be sure to check these items off of your to-do list immediately:

  • Get a manicure. Everyone will be asking to see your ring and taking photos of your new bling – make sure it looks it’s best next to freshly painted nails!
  • Sign up with Pinterest- it is a bride-to-be’s paradise. You could spend days on end clicking through DIY wedding details, inspiring photos, and millions of wedding planning tips! Get an inspiration board together so you go into appointments with a solid idea of what you want from each vendor. Bonus points if you download the app for your phone so you can show them photos of that you love.
  • Have the “money talk” with your fiance and whomever else may be helping you to pay for the wedding. It is better to start off knowing exactly how much you can spend rather than cutting out details, which you have become attached to, later.
  • Insure your ring. This is often over looked, but very important. You have waited long enough for that “rock”, so be sure to keep it covered in case of an emergency.
  • Call Ovation Images, Pittsburgh Wedding Photographers! You will want to make sure you book your date early to ensure you will get flawless memories of your big day! Plus, the engagement session can help you get a jump start on save the dates!

Ovation Images Wedding Tip #61:

Hold hands…. a lot! Someone once told me that she and her husband have completely different wedding day memories because they were constantly caught talking to different people. On your wedding day, if you are holding hands you are much less likely to get pulled in seperate directions. Therefore, you will spend the day together, create memories together, and who wouldn’t want to hold the hand of the one the love the most?? After all, your day is about celebrating your love!

Instead of putting fake rings on the ring bearer’s pillow, use colorful candy sucker rings. Bonus: To keep the ring bearer content during the ceremony, he can remove the rings and suck on them!
