Heinz Chapel Closed – Alternative Cathedral Ideas From Ovation Images

With Heinz Memorial Chapel  closed January 1- May 10, 2015, you may find yourself looking for alternatives. As you would expect, we at Ovation Images, Pittsburgh’s most-trusted wedding photographer since 2001, have some suggestions for you!

Heinz Chapel Embrace

Heinz Chapel Embrace

Of course, if you are having a Catholic wedding ceremony, then you have your choice of cathedral-style churches from St. Paul Cathedral to St. Mary Of The Mount. The switch will be simpler if you are having a Catholic ceremony.

But if your wedding service is non-denominational, you have a different problem entirely.  One of our 2015 brides was caught in this closure and she was kind enough to share her thoughts: “The reason I liked Heinz Chapel was the interior style–the cathedral look–and I wanted to keep that a part of my wedding.” Her suggestions for cathedral-style alternatives to Heinz Chapel are

East Liberty Presbyterian Church – http://cathedralofhope.org/ – “This was one of the closest in looks to Heinz Chapel, however you or close family have to be a member of the church and have to go to classes to get married.”
Downtown First Presbyterian Church – http://www.fpcp.org/
Trinity Cathedral Downtown – http://www.trinitycathedralpgh.org/
Calvary United Methodist Church (north shore) – http://www.calvarypgh.com/
Smithfield UCC – http://www.smithfieldchurch.org/

“I really liked Smithfield UCC because it has a little of that gothic look and is brighter than the other churches we saw (less wood). You do not have to be a member and you can bring in a different officiant if you want (it just need to be approved). They seemed less structured, which we really like.”

Other suggestions will be in our next blog post–watch this (cyber)space!

NOTE: In case you missed it, this notice is from the Heinz Memorial Chapel web site:  ” Heinz Memorial Chapel will be closed from January 1, 2015 to May 10, 2015 and will reopen on May 11, 2015.  This is to allow for the installation of a climate control system. We will not be taking reservations for any events, including weddings, during that time. The climate control system is an important part of plans for the preservation of the building, its pipe organ, and woodwork.  Thank you for your understanding as we undertake this historic project”

The Five Rules For Buying Wedding Photography (Part 2)
by Don Merz, Ovation Images (Pittsburgh’s Most-Trusted Wedding Photographer Since 2001)

(Part 2 of 2: We didn’t make these rules. After photographing 500+ weddings, we just know what they are…)
Ovation Images Rule 3: Don’t Be Cheap. Do you know why quality professional wedding photography is expensive? Because it’s worth it! Thousands of couples who got married before you decided they were willing to pay more to ensure better results. And it turns out, they were right. Sure you have a budget. But don’t use it like a club to scare away all the quality photographers. Be gentle and flexible and you will be met with the same in return. Good photographers love their clients and their work. In fact, that love is what makes their photography good! When you are choosing a photographer, focus on finding the love–and be prepared to adjust your budget. Wouldn’t you rather spend more than you had planned now to avoid that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach later when you look at your wedding pictures? “Later” is too late to change it–and too late to figure out that you under-budgeted your wedding photography.

“Cake, dear?” by OvationImages.com

Ovation Images Rule 4. Schedule Your Day Wisely. Your wedding photography will be better the more time you allocate to it. Likewise, it will be worse the less time you allocate to it. If you are not seeing each other before your ceremony, then you need at least 2 hours in between your ceremony and reception. No ifs, ands or “but our guests are waiting!” If they love you, they will be glad to wait–they know that this time is the only time you have to create pictures that you will share with your children’s children!  It starts to sound pretty worthwhile when you put it like that, huh? Be certain you have allowed more than adequate time for your photography.

“Found it!” by OvationImages.com

Ovation Images Rule 5. Have Fun and Be Fun. Planning your wedding may have been stressful. But now it is time to be “in the moment” and put all that behind you. Don’t check up on the details. Delegate everything to someone else. Don’t answer or even carry your phone. Don’t wear a watch. Sing in the shower and start the day off right! On this one day of all days, be the shining star you were meant to be. All your friends and family will reflect your glow back at you…..Everybody looks better in pictures when they are having fun! It’s going to be a truly once-in-a-lifetime day!
Ovation Images‘  Rules one and two for buying great wedding photography are here in the PREVIOUS POST.

The Five Rules For Buying Wedding Photography (Part 1)
by Don Merz, Ovation Images (Pittsburgh’s Most-Trusted Wedding Photographer Since 2001)

(Part 1 of 2: We didn’t make these rules. After photographing 500+ weddings, we just know what they are…)
Ovation Images Rule 1. Know What You Like. An hour of web surfing will uncover many different styles of photography. Do you like fashion? Well, fashion photography is posed photography. So you need a photographer who is good at posing. You like story-telling pictures? Candid story telling is the core of most wedding photography–so make sure you like the way your photographer shoots candids. The way to be sure is to ask to see a complete wedding–not just the highlights. If you like formal-looking, timeless portraits, then hire a photographer who runs a real brick-and-mortar portrait studio. Studio photographers are the best at achieving the classic, timeless look. Don’t meet with any photographers until you have surfed enough to know what you like.

“I think we’re ready….” by OvationImages.com

Ovation Images Rule 2. Know Who You Like. This is where being a bridesmaid and/or attending lots of your friends’ weddings and your cousins’ weddings will pay off. (Hopefully you were paying attention!)….and you had at least a few chances to see their photographers in action. Which ones behaved in ways that you liked? What did they do that the bride and groom enjoyed? Did you notice the photographer a lot during the day? Was that a good thing or a bad thing? Did they cause any delay during the day? What did they wear? Did you notice their professional approach? Or lack thereof? Make some notes, and when you meet with photographers ask them what their personal style is on the wedding day. Ask them what they do when people stand in the aisle in front of them taking pictures on their phones. Ask them if your friends and family are allowed to take pictures. Don’t be shy–make sure you understand how they will behave. It’s important because you will be spending all day with your photographers!
